GPI Illustrated #77: British Grand Prix Edition
The 2013 British Grand Prix weekend was the most dramatic edition of this year’s world championship thus far.
Before an engine had even fired up Mark Webber dropped a bombshell by announcing he is quitting F1 at the end of the season and we know what that means - a highly coveted seat with Red Bull available and with that the ‘silly season’ has well and truly erupted.
Then we had the weather, namely rain on the opening morning with little action for the 80,000 or so fans braving the elements while the majority of drivers remained in the cosy confines of their pit garages.
Fortunately qualifying made up for all that as Lewis Hamilton simply pulverised everyone on his way to top spot on the grid.
And it all got off to a good start with the local hero setting the early pace until he suffered a blowout... and there were a further three blowouts in the race as something was clearly amiss with the Pirelli tyres in use at Silverstone.
By the time the dust settled Nico Rosberg went on to score a popular win, but only after race leader Sebastian Vettel parked his Red Bull with a broken transmission to cheers from the stands. Webber was second, behind Rosberg, and Fernando Alonso third.
We have it all in vivid pictures by the best snappers in the sport!
